Set Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite provides for a high-HPC-environment tools enterprise-class scalability and efficiency. Multiprocessor support: HPC Pack 2008 R2 can address up to 64 cores on a single machine. Multiprocessor Support
Windows Server 2008 HPC Edition and Windows Server 2008 Standard support up to four processors per server. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise supports up to eight processors per server.

Disk volumes
A single system volume is required for the head and compute nodes. Redundant array of independent disks (RAID) is supported but not required. The system volume must be Master Boot Record (MBR). Additional volumes can be MBR or GUID Partition Table (GPT).
Network interface card
At least one network interface card (NIC) is required. If a private network is used, the head node requires at least two NICs, and compute nodes at least one. Each node may also require a high-speed NIC for an application network.
Software Requirements
The head and compute nodes for Windows HPC Server 2008 can be any of the following:

The cluster head node uses SQL Server as its data repository. An existing SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 installation can be used, or the HPC Pack 2008 installer will install SQL Express. SQL Server Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition is required for head node failover clustering.
The administration console and the user console for job submission are automatically installed on the head node of the compute cluster. These components can also be installed on other computers allowing either remote management of the cluster or job submission from client computers. Windows HPC Server 2008 is available in English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese. The Microsoft HPC Pack will also install on any of the Windows Server 2 008 x64-based operating systems (Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter). When installed on an edition of Windows that does not match the HPC Pack languages, the HPC Pack user interfaces will be displayed in English.

Running Excel User-Defined Functions on a Windows HPC Cluster
Cluster-Safe User Defined Functions are a new feature of Microsoft Office Excel 2010, which provides the ability to run complex, or time consuming User Defined Functions – functions contained in Excel extension libraries (XLLs) – on a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite based cluster.
Running Excel as a Windows HPC cluster SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) Client
Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite also provides ways to use Excel as WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) clients to submit SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) requests to a calculation service on a cluster and then visualize the results.
Additionally, two new diagnostic tests for Microsoft Excel 2010 were added. By running these diagnostic tests, you can determine if Microsoft Excel 2010 is installed and properly licensed on your HPC cluster, as well as verify that the user-defined function (UDF) container service is loaded and ready on the nodes.

With a Windows HPC cluster installed on an organizations network, all authorized users in the organization can take advantage of the cluster. Download the Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 R2 DVD image (HPCPack.Express.iso)
If your evaluation hardware does not already have a Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system installed, also download the Windows Server in 2008 R2 HPC Edition DVD image (SRVHPCR2__R.iso).
Burn these images to DVD-Rs using your standard DVD burning software.
Use the DVD to install Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition, when asked for a product key use: Q7PRR-M2WBM-RJJ99-FG393-MGY3B
Insert the HPC Pack 2008 DVD and run setup.exe to start the HPC Pack installation wizard.
